ακόμα and ακόμη are variations of the same word, so they can be used interchangeably.  There is no difference at all in the meaning.

She's right, although ακόμα is much more common. Ακόμη sounds a bit old fashioned to me. My advice is to use ακόμα, but keep in mind there is an alternative, if you happen to hear it.
