I always said συγνώμη in both situations such as sorry (if I bump into someone or have made an error) and also if I ask, say, excuse me when I wish to pass them.

However - I feel for the latter I should say με συγχωρείτε (excuse me in English). I have heard Greeks use both so.....will my use of the latter be acceptable and is it more polite?

Συγνώμη would be the correct phrase to use.

"Sorry" is used by some, but it is definitely not Greek.  Same like "ok", Greeks use it, but it is not in the Greek vocabulary.
