I say  καλημέρα in the morning and usually say καλησπέρα after midday right through the rest of the day but.........is it correct to say good afternoon ie καλό απόυευμα ......or is that too formal?

Thank you

Γεια σου Ιάκοβε

"Καλό απόγευμα" is a goodbye and not a hello greeting.

When you meet someone, you say "Καλησπέρα" to greet him (as a hello) and "καλό απόγευμα" when you leave him (as a goodbye).

Examples:

"Καλησπέρα Ιάκοβε, τι κάνεις;" = "Good evening, James, how are you?"

"Τα λέμε αύριο. Καλό απόγευμα!" = "See you tomorrow. Good afternoon!"
