How are relative clauses formed in Greek, the positions of the phrases.

Translate the following sentences and observe.

1. Do you know the girl who started in grade 7 last week?
2. My ESL teacher, who came to Germany in 1986, likes to ride his mountain bike.
3. Do you know the girl (who/m)he's talking to ?
4. Who's that man (who is ) standing by the gate?

The translation is:

1. Ξέρεις το κορίτσι που άρχισε στο επίπεδο 7 την περασμένη εβδομάδα;

2.Στον  ESL δάσκαλό μου, ο οποίος (οr που) ήρθε στη Γερμανία το 1986, αρέσει να κάνει βόλτες με το ποδήλατό του για βουνά. 

3. Ξέρεις το κορίτσι στο οποίο μιλάει αυτός;

4. Ποιος είναι εκείνος ο άντρας που στέκεται δίπλα στην πύλη;

So:

who = ο οποίος (masc.),  η οποία (fem.),  το οποίο (neutr.) or που (for all the genders)

           που is more common in oral speech and less formal than the others.

 

whom = τον οποίο,  την οποία,  το οποίο

to whom = στον οποίο,  στην οποία,  στο οποίο

where = όπου          

Example:

Το μέρος όπου συναντηθήκαμε ήταν υπέροχο.   = The place where we met was wonderful.
