When I lived in Cyprus every time my adopted Greek γιαγιά or someone in the vicinity dropped something or did something silly she used to say something which she said meant 'in life you learn a lesson'! She could not read or write so it was difficult to know what she meant.

Did she say something like  μάθει ενα μάθημα  which i translate as 'learn a lesson' or was it some actual saying in Greek? I took it that she meant to say ' in life you learn a lesson'

Γεια σου Ιάκοβε.

I don't know if there is another idiomatic phrase in Cyprus, but here in Greece we say: "Το πάθημα θα σου γίνει μάθημα" or just "Το πάθημα μάθημα".They both mean: "You will learn from your mistake".
