The word "καναπές" comes from the Ancient Greek word "κώνωψ" (Modern Greek "κουνούπι" = mosquito). Back then, they used to cover their chaise longues with a sheet, which was named "κωνωπείον", in order to protect themselves from the mosquitos during sleep. From this sheet, the name, through time, passed to the furniture in French and then it came back in Greek as a reborrowing.

The ancient Greek word for mosquito was not κουνούπι (that is the New Greek word), but κώνωψ.
This is correct, Please see my updated answer.
