I now that Φέτα is spelt like this for my favourite Greek cheese but...........someone told me that it is also Greek for 'slice' as in a slice of cake.

If that is so then is it spelt exactly the same with the tonos on the ε?

If that is the case can I presume that a question such as 'may I have a slice of cake?' would be understood by the content of the sentence?

Exactly!

"Φέτα" translates to "slice".  But it also means the traditional white Greek cheese.
