I visited Greece for the first time in my life last year for a week's holiday, having bought on Ebay a Teach Yourself Modern Greek by S.A.Sofroniou. I first started learning Attic Greek when I was nine years old in 1948, then Homeric in 1951, which I found much easier. I had what was then a typical education in classics for an English boy. Are there any textbooks on Modern Greek more suitable for such as me? We are a dying breed. Thank God the waiters at the hotel in Corfu had a sense of humour! I described the alfresco breakfast as a sphekodeipnos and they understood me.
